A Salik balance check takes about a minute: log in to your account on the Salik website or in the official Salik app, where the dashboard shows your balance, or call 800-Salik (800 72545). All three are free and work for any vehicle with a Dubai Salik tag.
A regular Salik balance check matters because a low balance turns into a fine. If you pass a toll gate without enough credit, you have five working days to recharge before an AED 50 fine is added. This guide covers every official way to check, how to recharge and the minimum amount, the 2026 toll rates with VAT, and what to do when something looks wrong.
Salik balance check: every official method compared
The Salik app is the quickest option for most drivers, and the phone line works when you have no data or no login. The table shows what each method needs.
| Method | What you need | What you see | Best for |
|---|---|---|---|
| Salik website (salik.ae) | A Salik online account: mobile number plus plate number or Salik account number | Balance and recent toll gate trips | Checking from a laptop, managing several cars |
| Salik app (Smart Salik in the app stores) | The same Salik account | Balance, trip history, alerts, statements | Daily drivers who want low-balance alerts |
| 800-Salik phone line | Your Salik account details | Balance read out by the line | No internet, or no online account yet |
| Low-balance SMS | An up-to-date mobile number on your account | A warning when credit runs low | Everyone, as a safety net |
| Rental car company | Your rental agreement | Salik trips charged to you | Drivers of rented cars |
The RTA homepage no longer has a Salik balance box. Its Salik link now sends you to salik.ae, so use the Salik channels above.
How to check your Salik balance on the Salik website
The website shows your balance on the account dashboard once you log in. If you have never created an online account, you set one up with your mobile number in a few minutes.
- Open the official Salik website.
- If you are new, choose create an account and enter your mobile number with either your car plate number or your Salik account number. The account number is issued when you buy the tag.
- Enter the one-time password (OTP) sent to your mobile to finish registration.
- Log in. The dashboard shows your account balance and the toll gates you passed recently.
From the same dashboard you can open the recharge tab and top up by card or with a recharge card number.
Salik balance check in the app
The official Salik app shows your balance on its home dashboard as soon as you sign in. It is published by RTA-Salik and is listed as Smart Salik on the App Store and Google Play.
- Install the app and sign in with your Salik account.
- Read the balance on the dashboard.
- Open the trip history to see each gate crossing, or download a monthly statement.
The app is worth keeping for its alerts alone. It sends notifications for low balance, unpaid trips, violations and variable toll rates, and the dashboard has a countdown timer that warns you before a possible violation is issued.
Salik balance check by phone
You can check your Salik balance by calling 800-Salik, which is 800 72545. The UAE government portal tells drivers to check the balance this way from time to time and to recharge online.
Keep your Salik account number to hand before you call. The same line takes prepaid recharge cards too.
Low-balance SMS alerts and why your number matters
Salik sends an SMS to the mobile number registered with your tag and account when your balance runs low or a trip goes through with insufficient funds. Those messages only reach you if your contact details are current.
In practice, many expats in the UAE miss these alerts after switching to a new SIM. If you change your number, update it in the Salik app or on the website straight away, or the five-day recharge window can pass without you knowing.
How to recharge Salik and the minimum amount
A Salik recharge starts at AED 50 per transaction and can go up to AED 50,000. Credit is added to the account linked to your tag, so you never need to touch the sticker itself.
| Recharge channel | How it works |
|---|---|
| Salik website | Log in, open Recharge, pay by card or enter a recharge card number |
| Salik app | Recharge from the dashboard with a card or a recharge card number |
| DubaiNow app | Sign in with UAE Pass, open Driving, then Salik, add your account number and Salik PIN; auto top-up is available |
| Dubai Drive app (RTA) | Sign in with UAE Pass, open Salik, enter the amount and pay |
| TAMM app | Open My utilities, then Salik; with UAE Pass your vehicles appear |
| Careem app | Pay your bills, then Salik, using your registered mobile number and plate |
| Bank apps, ATMs and cash deposit machines | Utilities or bill payment section, with your Salik account details; some banks offer auto top-up |
| Kiosks in malls | Pay by cash or card |
| Recharge cards | Sold at petrol station shops in AED 50, 100 and 200; redeem on salik.ae, in the app, by calling 800-Salik or by SMS to 5959 |
Fifteen banks support Salik top-ups, including Emirates NBD, Dubai Islamic Bank, ADCB, FAB, Mashreq and RAKBANK. Bank channels usually charge no extra fee, although an SMS recharge through a bank can cost a small amount such as 30 fils. The full list of extra channels is on Salik’s recharge channels page.
Auto top-up is the simplest fix if you forget to recharge. Set it up in DubaiNow or in a bank app that offers it, and the account refills automatically when the balance falls below a set level.
Salik toll rates and timings in 2026
Since 1 June 2026, a Salik crossing costs AED 6.30 at peak times and AED 4.20 off-peak, after 5% VAT was added to every toll. Crossings between 1am and 6am are free.
| Day | Time | Toll per crossing (with VAT) |
|---|---|---|
| Monday to Saturday | 6am to 10am and 4pm to 8pm (peak) | AED 6.30 |
| Monday to Saturday | 10am to 4pm and 8pm to 1am (off-peak) | AED 4.20 |
| Sunday | 6am to 1am | AED 4.20 |
| Every day | 1am to 6am | Free |
The Sunday flat rate does not apply on public holidays and during major events, when the normal peak and off-peak prices are used. The tariff itself has not changed; the extra 30 fils and 20 fils are the VAT, which Salik passes to the Federal Tax Authority.
The timing is what drains a balance. One peak crossing each way on a working day costs AED 12.60, so a five-day commute through one gate uses AED 63 a week. Passing the same gate after 10am instead saves AED 2.10 a crossing.
Ramadan has its own schedule. In Ramadan 2026, peak pricing ran from 9am to 5pm, off-peak from 7am to 9am and 5pm to 2am, and crossings were free from 2am to 7am. Salik announces the Ramadan hours each year, so check them before the month starts.
The 10 Salik gates and the one-hour rule
Dubai has 10 Salik toll gates. The two newest, Business Bay Crossing and Al Safa South, opened in November 2024.
- Al Safa North and Al Safa South, Sheikh Zayed Road
- Al Barsha, Sheikh Zayed Road
- Jebel Ali, Sheikh Zayed Road
- Business Bay Crossing, Al Khail Road
- Al Garhoud Bridge, Sheikh Rashid Road
- Al Maktoum Bridge, Umm Hurair Road
- Al Mamzar North and Al Mamzar South, Al Ittihad Road
- Airport Tunnel, Beirut Street
Two pairs of gates work together. If you pass Al Safa North and Al Safa South, or Al Mamzar North and Al Mamzar South, in the same direction within one hour, you pay only once.
What happens if your Salik balance is too low
You can still pass a gate with too little credit, but you must recharge within five working days. If you do, the fine is cancelled and the toll is simply taken from the new balance. If you do not, an insufficient funds fine of AED 50 is issued.
These rules come from Dubai Administrative Resolution No. (210) of 2009, which sets the fines per day, however many times you cross that day.
| Violation | Grace period | Fine |
|---|---|---|
| Insufficient balance | 5 working days to recharge | AED 50 per day, one violation per vehicle per day |
| No Salik tag (unregistered plate) | 10 working days to buy, activate and fix a tag | AED 100 first, AED 200 second, AED 400 each time after |
| Tampering with a tag or damaging Salik equipment | None | AED 10,000 |
You can see and pay Salik violations under Salik Services and Violations on salik.ae, in the RTA Dubai app under Services and Salik, or in the Dubai Police app under Pay Traffic Fines. Salik violations also land on your traffic file, so our Dubai traffic fine check guide is useful if you want to see everything owed on the car in one place. A disputed Salik fine must have been posted to your traffic file within the last 13 months.
Salik tag and account basics
Every vehicle that uses a Dubai toll gate needs its own Salik tag, a sticker on the windscreen that an RFID reader scans as you drive under the gate. The toll comes off your prepaid balance automatically, with no stopping or slowing down.
What a tag costs
A new tag comes with AED 50 of prepaid toll credit, which is added to your account when you activate it. Reports in 2026 put the total price at about AED 100 to AED 105 at an authorised agent and AED 120 to AED 126 online, where a delivery charge is added, so check the price shown at checkout.
Where to buy and activate it
- Online: on salik.ae or in the app, choose Purchase a tag and enter the traffic code number from your Mulkiya, the plate details, your mobile number and email. The tag activates automatically after the payment SMS and usually arrives within five working days.
- Petrol stations: Emarat, ENOC and ADNOC sell tags you can fix to the windscreen straight away. Activate it before your first gate through the Salik website or app, the RTA Dubai app or 800-Salik. It takes under five minutes.
Rules that affect your balance
- Tags cannot be moved to another vehicle. When you sell or scrap a car, apply to cancel its tag and settle any tolls and fines owed.
- An account with no tolls, payments or recharges for five years becomes inactive, and the remaining balance is lost.
- Rental cars usually come with a tag. The rental company charges your Salik trips when the lease ends, so ask it for the trip list.
- Visitors driving their own foreign-registered car into Dubai must buy and activate a tag too.
Salik and nol are separate balances. Salik pays for toll gates only, while metro, bus and RTA parking payments come from a nol card, which has its own nol card balance check. Abu Dhabi has its own toll gate system, Darb, with separate rules.
Common problems and how to fix them
- You never received a low-balance SMS. Your account probably holds an old mobile number. Update it in the app or on the website and turn on app notifications as a second alert.
- The balance dropped faster than expected. Peak crossings now cost AED 6.30. Open the trip history in the app to see each gate, date and time.
- You crossed a gate with a zero balance. Recharge within five working days and the toll is deducted with no fine.
- The new car shows unpaid trips. A tag from your old car does not carry over. Buy and activate a new tag within 10 working days of the first trip.
- A petrol station tag is not working. It needs manual activation. Activate it online or through 800-Salik before you drive under a gate.
Frequently asked questions
How do I check my Salik balance online?
You can check your Salik balance online by logging in to your account on salik.ae or in the official Salik app, where the balance appears on the dashboard. To create an account, enter your mobile number with your plate number or Salik account number and confirm the one-time password. The dashboard also lists the toll gates you passed recently, so you can see where the credit went.
Can I check my Salik balance by calling a number?
Yes, you can check your Salik balance by calling 800-Salik, which is 800 72545, the number the UAE government portal gives for balance checks. Keep your Salik account number ready before you call. The same line also accepts prepaid recharge cards when you enter your account number and PIN, which helps if you have no internet access at that moment.
What happens if my Salik balance is not enough?
If your Salik balance is not enough when you pass a gate, you have five working days to recharge before an AED 50 fine is issued. Recharging in time cancels the violation and the toll is taken from the new credit. After the deadline the fine is AED 50 per day, with no more than one violation per vehicle each day.
What is the minimum Salik recharge amount?
The minimum Salik recharge is AED 50 per transaction, and one recharge can go up to AED 50,000. Prepaid recharge cards sold at petrol station shops come in AED 50, AED 100 and AED 200. Bank channels usually add no service fee, though an SMS top-up through a bank can cost a small charge such as 30 fils.
How much is Salik per crossing in 2026?
A Salik crossing costs AED 6.30 at peak times and AED 4.20 off-peak in 2026, after 5% VAT started on 1 June 2026. Peak hours are 6am to 10am and 4pm to 8pm, Monday to Saturday. Sundays cost AED 4.20 all day except on public holidays and during major events, and every crossing between 1am and 6am is free.
Does an unused Salik balance expire?
An unused Salik balance is lost only if the account stays inactive for five years, with no tolls, payments or recharges in that time. Salik then deactivates the account and forfeits the remaining credit. A single toll crossing or a small recharge before the five years end keeps the account active, which matters for anyone who has left the UAE.
