Visa Cancellation in the UAE: How to Cancel a Residence Visa Step by Step

Last updated: 25 October 2026

Visa cancellation in the UAE is done by your sponsor, not by you: an employer first cancels your work permit with the Ministry of Human Resources and Emiratisation (MOHRE), then cancels your residence visa with ICP, or with GDRFA Dubai if the visa was issued in Dubai. A family sponsor cancels the visas of the spouse and children before cancelling his or her own.

Once the residence is cancelled, a grace period starts, and you use it to leave the UAE or move to a new visa. Below are the steps for employees and families, the official fees, cancelling from abroad, status checks, the Emirates ID, final pay and employer disputes.

Important: Once your residence is cancelled a grace period starts. Staying beyond it costs AED 50 a day, so plan your exit or new visa before it ends.

How visa cancellation works in the UAE

A residence visa in the UAE is tied to a sponsor, so the sponsor files the cancellation. The UAE government portal u.ae says that normally only the sponsor can cancel your residence visa and that you cannot process the application on your own.

The route depends on the sponsor:

  • Employer (private sector): two stages. MOHRE cancels the work permit and employment contract first, then ICP or GDRFA cancels the residence.
  • Family sponsor: the resident who sponsors a spouse, children or other dependants cancels their residence permits directly with ICP or GDRFA. There is no MOHRE step for family members.
  • Investors, partners, retirees and property owners: ICP has separate categories for these residents. It asks investors and partners for a certificate showing the commercial licence was cancelled or given up.

The residence step goes to the authority of the emirate that issued the visa: the General Directorate of Residency and Foreigners Affairs (GDRFA Dubai) for Dubai, and the Federal Authority for Identity, Citizenship, Customs and Port Security (ICP) for the other six emirates.

Cancelling an employment visa: the two stages

For a private sector employee, the employer cancels the MOHRE work permit first and the residence second. Cancelling the work permit alone does not cancel the residence.

Stage 1: MOHRE work permit cancellation

MOHRE’s published procedure, reported by Gulf News in July 2026, sets out what the employer needs before the work permit can be cancelled:

  1. Any fines the company owes for late issue or renewal of work permits are paid.
  2. The employer declares that all your entitlements have been paid, including leave encashment and end of service gratuity where they apply.
  3. You sign the cancellation form, which confirms you agree to the cancellation and have received your dues.
  4. The employer submits the request on the MOHRE website or app with UAE Pass, MOHRE reviews it, and the approval is issued electronically.

MOHRE generally completes this within two working days once everything is in place. Your signature is not needed in a few cases: when you are outside the UAE, when you have died, when you have a confirmed contagious disease, or when your status has already been cancelled administratively with ICP.

Stage 2: residence cancellation with ICP or GDRFA

With the MOHRE cancellation in hand, the employer applies to the immigration authority. GDRFA Dubai lists the MOHRE work permit cancellation extract as a required document for private sector employees, together with the sponsor’s passport and your passport.

  1. The employer or its PRO applies on the ICP smart services website or app, or the GDRFA website or app, after logging in with UAE Pass. A typing centre or, in Dubai, an Amer centre can file it instead.
  2. The cancellation request is filled in. ICP pulls most details from your file and asks for documents only if that data cannot be retrieved.
  3. The fee is paid.
  4. The residence permit is cancelled. ICP’s service card says the linked Emirates ID is cancelled in the same step.

ICP lists 2 days to complete; GDRFA Dubai expects 48 hours.

Free zone employees follow their free zone authority for the first step; ICP handles their residence in the same employee category. For domestic workers, ICP says residence cancellation goes through MOHRE or the Domestic Work Bundle.

Visa cancellation UAE fees: official figures

Visa cancellation fees in the UAE are set per authority. These are the amounts on the ICP and GDRFA service cards as of October 2026.

Authority and case Fee Processing time
ICP, employee or family member: application fee AED 50 2 days
ICP, smart services fee (online) AED 100 Same request
ICP, exceptional cancellation (for example a dispute or the sponsor’s death) AED 100 Accepted only in exceptional cases
ICP, guarantee to cancel the sponsor’s residence without cancelling the family’s AED 5,000 guarantee plus AED 20 deposit fee Only when the conditions below are met
GDRFA Dubai, residence permit cancellation AED 100 plus AED 10 Knowledge Dirham and AED 10 Innovation Dirham 48 hours
Staying after the grace period ends AED 50 per day From the day after the grace period

Typing centres and Amer centres can add their own service charges on top. MOHRE’s fee for the work permit step is not listed here; the employer files that stage and can confirm the cost.

Cancelling a family or dependant visa

A family sponsor cancels the dependants’ residence first and his or her own second. Both u.ae and ICP set this order.

  1. Log in to ICP smart services or the GDRFA app with UAE Pass, or visit a typing centre or Amer centre.
  2. Choose the residence cancellation service and the family member category, with each person’s passport ready.
  3. Pay the fee for each person and keep the cancellation paper for each one.
  4. Cancel your own residence, or have your employer cancel it, once the family files are closed.

Keeping the family visas when you change jobs

When you are moving to a new employer rather than leaving, you may not have to cancel your family’s visas at all. ICP’s card allows the family’s permits to be placed on hold for a limited period with fees, or the sponsor’s own residence to be cancelled without the family’s against a guarantee of AED 5,000.

The guarantee applies only when all of these are true:

  • the change of your status to a new employer has been approved;
  • you meet the salary and occupation conditions for sponsoring all your family members;
  • your own residence is valid or still within its grace period; and
  • each family member’s residence has at least three months of validity left.

Ask ICP on 600522222 which option applies before you cancel anything.

Cancelling while you are inside or outside the UAE

Inside the UAE

From the cancellation date, a grace period runs. You use it to leave the UAE or to move to a new visa with a new employer or family sponsor. ICP sets the length by residence category: employees outside its listed groups get 30 days, while skilled workers in levels 1 to 3 get 90. Our overstay fine guide lists every category in a table.

GDRFA Dubai’s cancellation service page mentions a grace period of 60 days after a residence permit is cancelled or expires. Because the two authorities word this differently, check the last day of stay shown on your own file or cancellation paper rather than assuming the longer period. After the grace period, the overstay fine is AED 50 a day.

Outside the UAE

If you have already left, your employer can still cancel the work permit and residence. MOHRE does not need your signature when you are outside the UAE, and the employer supplies your residence details instead. Ask HR to send you the cancellation papers by email.

If nobody cancels it, the u.ae portal’s general rule is that a residence visa lapses when the holder lives outside the UAE for more than 180 days in a row, with some exceptions. If you are unsure of your status after a long stay abroad, contact ICP or GDRFA before you book a return flight.

How to check that your visa cancellation is complete

Check the file with the authority that issued the visa, a day or two after the employer says it is done.

  • Visas from outside Dubai: on the ICP smart services platform, open Public Services and then File Validity. Search by file number or passport details, choose Residency, and enter your UID, file number, Emirates ID or passport number with your date of birth. The result shows the file status and the issue and expiry dates.
  • Dubai visas: use the visa status service on the GDRFA Dubai website and search by file number or application number.

In practice, keep a copy of the cancellation paper on your phone; a new employer often asks for it.

What happens to your Emirates ID

Your Emirates ID is cancelled with the residence. ICP’s service card lists “cancellation of the residence permit and the linked Emirates ID card” as the last step of the residence cancellation, and u.ae notes that the card expires when the visa does.

No separate request is needed for the card. A new residence permit comes with a new Emirates ID application.

Final settlement and gratuity before visa cancellation

The employer must pay your final wages and entitlements within 14 days of the end of the contract, under Article 53 of the UAE labour law. That includes unpaid salary, leave you have not taken where it is payable, and end of service gratuity if you completed at least one year.

The MOHRE cancellation form you sign says you have received your dues. Read the final settlement before you sign it and check the gratuity figure against your basic salary and years of service. Our UAE gratuity calculator gives you a figure to compare with the employer’s.

If you are joining a new employer straight away, also check whether you owe any unemployment insurance fines. Unpaid ILOE fines can hold up the new work permit, and our ILOE fine check guide shows how to look them up.

Common problems and how to handle them

The employer refuses to cancel or will not pay first

MOHRE will not process a normal cancellation when the employer refuses to declare your dues paid, or when you refuse to sign because they are not. The case moves to MOHRE’s labour complaint process.

You can also file a complaint asking MOHRE to cancel your work permit without the employer’s consent. Under Ministerial Resolution No. 47 of 2022, MOHRE tries to reach the employer for five working days, plus five more if the employer asks for time. It then completes the cancellation at your request unless the employer shows you are under investigation for a crime related to your work. Our MOHRE complaint guide explains how to file and follow the case.

While a complaint is still being handled at MOHRE, cancellation is generally put on hold during the settlement attempt.

An absconding report has been filed

An employer can register an unexpected work abandonment report, often called an absconding report, when a worker is absent without a lawful reason for more than seven days in a row and cannot be reached. If the report is proven true, the worker faces a one-year ban on new work permits.

An active report also blocks MOHRE’s cancellation service for workers whose cases are in court until the report is resolved. MOHRE can cancel a report that is wrong, for example when seven days had not passed, the absence had a legitimate reason, or the employer had agreed to end the job. Collect leave approvals and messages with your manager and challenge the report through MOHRE straight away.

Other mistakes that cost money

  • Leaving without checking the file. An employer saying “it is done” is not proof.
  • Counting on 60 days when you are in the 30-day group. Confirm your last day of stay on your own file.
  • Signing the MOHRE form before your final pay arrives. The form confirms you were paid in full.

Frequently asked questions

Who can cancel my residence visa in the UAE?

Only your sponsor can cancel your residence visa in the UAE, which means your employer for a work visa or the family member who sponsors you. The u.ae portal says you cannot process the cancellation on your own. A company usually files it through its PRO or a typing centre, after MOHRE has cancelled the work permit for private sector employees.

Do I have to cancel my family’s visas before my own?

Yes, a sponsor in the UAE must cancel the residence visas of a spouse, children and other dependants before cancelling his or her own. If you are moving to a new employer instead of leaving, ICP may let the family’s visas stay open through a hold for a limited period or a guarantee of AED 5,000, provided the conditions on its service card are met.

Can my employer cancel my visa while I am outside the UAE?

Yes, your employer can cancel your UAE work permit and residence visa while you are abroad. MOHRE does not require your signature on the cancellation form when you are outside the UAE, and the employer supplies your residence details instead. Ask HR to email you the cancellation papers and check the file status online before you plan any return trip.

How do I know if my UAE visa is cancelled?

You can check whether your UAE visa is cancelled on the website of the authority that issued it. For visas from outside Dubai, use File Validity under Public Services on the ICP smart services platform. For Dubai visas, use the visa status service on the GDRFA Dubai website. The result shows the file status and the issue and expiry dates.

What happens to my Emirates ID when my visa is cancelled?

Your Emirates ID is cancelled together with your residence visa, because ICP cancels the linked card in the same step. You do not need to file a separate request for the card. If you take a new residence visa in the UAE, ICP issues it with a new Emirates ID application, so update your bank and telecom provider once the new card arrives.

What can I do if my employer refuses to cancel my visa?

If your employer refuses to cancel your visa, you can file a complaint with MOHRE asking it to cancel your work permit without the employer’s consent. MOHRE contacts the employer for five working days, plus five more if the employer asks, then cancels the permit at your request unless a work-related criminal investigation is shown. You then settle your residence status.

Key takeaways

  • Visa cancellation in the UAE is normally filed by the sponsor; employees go through MOHRE first, then ICP or GDRFA Dubai.
  • Family members are cancelled before the sponsor, unless ICP’s hold or AED 5,000 guarantee applies when changing jobs.
  • ICP charges an AED 50 application fee plus AED 100 for smart services; GDRFA Dubai charges AED 100 plus AED 20 in extra charges.
  • The grace period starts on the cancellation date; check your last day of stay on your own file.
  • Do not sign the MOHRE form until your final settlement is paid; use MOHRE’s complaint route if the employer refuses.
